vanadium isiting Macquarie University? Follow the directions below.

Macquarie University is a pleasant "green" campus in a residential area about 25km north-west of the centre of Sydney. The site is on Epping Rd between Herring and Culloden Rds; the main entrances are in Herring (cnr. Waterloo) and Balaclava (cnr. Epping) Rds. Click here for regional and campus maps

Arriving by Plane

If you are not being met at the airport you can travel from Sydney's Kingsford-Smith Airport to Macquarie in the following ways:

1. Take a taxi

The fare is approximately A$50.00 to $A65.00. Ask the taxi driver to take you to "Macquarie University in North Ryde". The taxi will probably go via the Harbour Bridge or Harbour Tunnel. If you have never been to Sydney before, we suggest you ask the driver to go via the bridge (not the tunnel). The trip should take about 40 minutes if you are arriving on Sunday, longer on any other day.

2. By train to the city, then by a bus to Macquarie

Airport Link train leave every 10 minutes from the airport (less frequently on a Sunday) for the city centre. The fare is A$10.00 (one way). The train can be accessed from the Domestic or International Terminals - just follow the signs. Get off the train at Central and either walk to the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) or get the city circle train to Town Hall Station. Have a look at the map by clicking here.

From there you can take a bus to the Marsfield-Epping area, routes 288, 289, 290, 291, 292 or 294 which leave from York Street behind the QVB. Some of these buses are ``via Freeway'' and some are ``via Crows Nest'' or ``via Lane Cove Shops''. Any route is okay. The fare is A$3.30. The freeway route takes about 35 minutes, the others about 50 minutes. The bus-stop is shown on the map of the Epping area. Get off the bus at Macquarie University - ask the bus driver if you are not sure where it is.

3. By airport link city, then by train

Get off the airportlink train at Central Railway Station. An electric train along the North Sydney-to-Berowra-via-Strathfield line will take you to Epping Station in about 30 minutes (Platform 18). You can look at the timetable by clicking here. From Central, any train that goes West will do. However, if you catch any other train but the "North Sydney-to-Berowra-via-Strathfield" line you will need to change platforms in Strathfield.

From Epping station it is a 10-minute journey by bus along Epping Road. Routes 140, 288, 290 or 291 to the city leave from the east side of the station. Get off the bus at Macquarie University. Please note that the 140, 288, and 290 go through the University Campus but 291 does not. If you catch the 291 please get off at the Balaclava or Herring Road stops (closest to Colleges/Hotels).

4. By hiring a car and driving yourself

You can hire a car at the Airport as all the major vendors have desks there open all day and night. The cheapest place to hire a car is Bayswater Car Hire [Ph (02) 9360 3622]. To get there, take the green and yellow "Route 350" bus from the airport (see above). Get off on Darlighurst Rd (stop 14) and the car hire is back down the street about 100m on the other side of the road. The best way to drive is to follow the signposts saying "City" and then "Sydney Harbour Bridge" until you cross the bridge. At the north end of the bridge keep on the freeway and follow the "Epping" signs (see map of Sydney). Just after crossing the Lane Cove River, the road forks. Keep left as the right hand side proceeds on to the M2 motorway that goes right by Macquarie, but there are no exits. From Epping Rd, turn right into Herring Rd and then enter the University at Waterloo Rd. Use the campus map to find a parking spot. It will cost you $3 (up to 1 hour), $6 (up to 3 hours), $8 (4 hours or more) to park on campus. Be careful as the parking areas are rigorously patrolled by parking police. Free parking is often available in either Talvera or Culloden Rds, within walking distance of the campus.

At Macquarie

The Chemistry Building is code named "F7B" and is closest to the Waterloo Rd entrance, right near Macquarie Research Park. Take the first road right after the entrance and the 4 storey building at the first round-about is it. Park in the multilevel carpark and proceed to the second floor.
