Bachelor of Sciences (Biological Chemistry) Degree

Chemical Biology is an exciting new area at the interface of chemistry with biology and deals with biological processes at the molecular level and the manipulation of biological systems with small molecules. The emphasis is on understanding of the reactivity and structure of biological molecules (proteins, DNA, fats) and how they interact with other molecules (eg drugs, pollutants and other biological molecules). The Department of Chemistry at Macquarie University has a declared focus on Biological Chemistry that is unique in Australia.

Entry Requirements
While there is no formal prior knowledge requirement for the BSc(Biological Chemistry) it is recommended that candidates have 2u or 3u mathematics, and either 2u Chemistry or 4u Science at High School. Introductory and bridging courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry are available at Macquarie University. The UAI has been steadiliy rising since 1999 (75.00) till the present (2003; 82.55).
About the Program:
Biological Chemistry combines studies in Organic Chemistry with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. These are combined with fundamental Chemistry and Biology and may also contain elements of Analytical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Ecology and Developmental Biology. This unique blend of course work and practical skills takes advantage of the close relationship between the Departments of Chemistry and Biology to ensure graduates of this program can find jobs in a broad range of science and health related areas.  A template for the units (courses) required to graduate from this program can be found here.
Career opportunities:
Career prospects include any area of biology, chemistry or biomedical work where a knowledge of the underlying chemical principles is needed or appreciated. For example:
  • The Pharmaceutical Industry,
  • Biotechnology,
  • The Cosmetic industry,
  • Science education,
  • Science journalism
  • Patent law,
  • Public relations,
  • Science librarian,
  • Food and beverage industry,
  • Scientific products industry,
  • Biomedical, biological, medical and chemical research,
  • Chemical, biological or medical analytical services.
