Many Chemistry Departments at front-rank universities have broadened their research scope and names to embrace the biological aspects of chemistry. Thus in 2005, the former Department of Chemistry changed its name to the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences (CBMS).
The Department of Chemistry was one of the founding Departments of Macquarie University, opening its doors in 1967. The University has evolved from a small institution pioneering innovative teaching methods located in 135 hectares of bushland to one of Australia's major research Universities in the heart of Australia's leading research park.
Macquarie's Department of Chemistry & Biolmolecular Sciences is part of the University's Division of Environmental and Life Sciences, within its College of Science and Technology. At present, the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences' staff are listed below. There are additional research staff and associates supported by outside grants.
The Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences is located in a new (1998) building (F7B) adjacent to the University's Research Park and adjoining buildings (E8C, E8A). It maintains a solid research program and is well equipped with, for example, one of the best NMR facilities in the country. In the "Chemical Sciences", Macquarie ranked number 1 in the country according to the number of citations per paper (1995-99; The Australian, Oct 24, 2001) and members of the department regulary receive national and international recognition for their research. Expertise covers a wide range of chemistry and interdisciplinary areas with Biology, Geology, Environmental Science and Physics. The Department hosts the Macquarie University Centre for Analytical Biotechnology (MUCAB), which provides a large range of analytical services and research opportunities.
The Department incorporates a number of research centres, including the Austrlaian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF), the Biotechnology Institute (MUBRI), CRC for Environmental Biotechnology (EBCRC), the Grain Foods CRC, Centre for Lasers and Applications (CLA) and is involved with a number of industrial partners such as FLUOROtechnics, Microbiogen, Nufarm, 3M, Microbial Screening Technologies and Novogen.
